About Us

At the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), you belong to a community of experts who are driving science and technology forward. Our teams bring together curiosity-driven, blue-skies thinking with practical, application-led science - to maximise our impact for the benefit of the UK and its people. This is the home of an incredible diversity of research, technology and engineering projects that truly fire the imagination and lead to real-world solutions which shape societies and transform lives. We give you the flexibility, the freedom and the world-class facilities to focus on what you do best, and play your part in breakthroughs and achievements that will give you lifelong pride.

The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) is an internationally recognised centre carrying out scientific software development and providing leading edge compute and data services to support the work of world class science both within STFC and internationally.

About the role

We require a professional to take responsibility for leading and developing our impact activities. This will require working with our team of 190 staff, together with the external scientific community. You will also work with STFC’s central Communications and Impact teams on all aspects of SCD impact activities.

The impact agenda is a key issue in public sector research and continues to be high on the Government’s agenda. Delivery of impact evidence over the spending review period is of significant importance to STFC and a critical factor in attracting Government funding.

A large proportion of the science, research and services carried out at SCD maps directly onto the UK’s key scientific priorities including energy, environment, health, information technology and security. Hence SCD is a key contributor to STFC’s impact portfolio.

A key part of the role will be to act as a translator between SCD scientists, technologist and users and STFC’s central impact and communications teams, pulling out key impact information, stories and measures which are used in various impact and communications activities.

Duties will include:

  • Working with SCD staff and users (academic and commercial) to research and translate material for impact studies, case studies, press releases, websites and other relevant material.
  • Providing stories, case studies and metrics for STFC’s annual Impact and Highlights Reports and other corporate activities such as the Triennial Review and Spending Reviews.
  • Working closely with STFC’s Strategy Performance and Communications Directorate to develop relevant impact and communications material for example working with the corporate impact team, to help develop impact metrics.
  • Acting as the SCD point of contact for any impact or communications issues and attend any STFC-wide fora as necessary.
  • Helping to convey SCD impact within STFC, to the external community, funders and the general public.

Given the importance of the impact agenda to future funding, the SCD Impact Manager will make a significant contribution to the reputation and future of both SCD and STFC.

About you

  • You’ll have experience of working with scientists or technical staff producing material for case studies, social media, websites, press releases and other outreach activities.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and with a high degree of autonomy together with the capability to work well within a team as projects demand.
  • Ability to be credible with colleagues at varying levels of seniority both internally and externally to the organisation. A technical background may be useful but not essential.
  • General PC skills, including a good working knowledge of MS Office and use of the internet.

This role will also require travel to STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire and to other partner sites.

Benefits

In addition to the competitive salary, an excellent index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexi-time are offered. Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
