By Jeremy Cohen, EPSRC RSE Fellow, Imperial College London. In the weeks running up to the RSE Conference, myself and some colleagues will be providing our thoughts on the questions people have submitted for our panel discussion with senior university management about how RSEs are being supported within academia. (You can submit more questions and vote on the current questions on Sli.do.) Question: How do you start an RSE group at a university that only has scattered RSEs in different departments?

By Nikoleta Glynatsi, Cardiff University, Software Sustainability Fellow. The International Conference on Social Dilemmas (ICSD) is a cross disciplinary gathering of psychologists, philosophers, computer scientists and mathematicians. It’s focused on topics broadly related to social dilemmas, such as conflicts between narrow self-interest and collective well-being. This year’s ICSD was the 18th instalment of the conference and it took place in Sedona, Arizona from 3 to 7 June 2019.
By Reka Solymosi, Software Sustainability Institute Fellow. From 4 – 5 April 2019, I attended the Women in Data Science Zurich 2019 conference as an invited speaker to talk about my research involving ‘new’ forms of data. In particular the use of crowdsourced data collection methods to gain insight into people’s perceptions and subjective evaluations of their environments.

The Carpentries community of practice started out with a clear goal: teaching foundational computational skills to researchers worldwide. Shared values and goals have long been the starting point of communities of practice as they identify changes they want to see and start working together towards these changes. As a community, The Carpentries are now looking to articulate more closely what these values are and wish the community members to be an integral part of creating these value statements.
Last call for papers - deadline 16 August! The Software Sustainability Institute is co-organising a workshop on Software Engineering for HPC-Enabled Research at Supercomputing 2019 in Denver.

In preparation for its formal launch, the Society of Researching Software Engineering has launched a new website. There, you can find all the information about the Society and its mission, including how to join, links to RSE groups around the world, future and past events, and job vacancies.

In affiliation with The Carpentries, The Software Sustainability Institute is organising the first European CarpentryConnect event in Manchester from 25th to 27th June 2019.

Collaborations Workshop 2019 (CW19) will take place from Monday 1st to Wednesday 3rd April 2019 at Loughborough University in the West Park Teaching Hub. The Software Sustainability Institute’s Collaborations Workshop series brings together researchers, developers, innovators, managers, funders, publishers, leaders and educators to explore best practices and the future of research software.
The Gateways Conference will take place from Tuesday through Thursday, 25th – 27th September 2018 at the University of Texas, Austin. Join gateway creators and enthusiasts to learn, share, connect, and shape the future of gateways.

"The Institute helped us to define just how we would work together… They taught me how to become a software manager rather than just a developer... I can't speak highly enough of them"

- Christopher Woods, AMRMMHD
