Computer Officer - University of Cambridge

The job will involve supporting users with IT issues; specifying, purchasing and installing new equipment in a heterogeneous environment (Linux/Max/Windows); managing the institute website, Linux servers and network equipment; assisting users with their code development, revision control, testing and curation.

We are looking for someone who is user focussed and motivated to help others with their IT problems. The appointee will be friendly, personable, organised and self-motivated with the ability to work without close supervision. They will have the openness and aptitude to learn new languages, IT environments and processes.

Key responsibilities include:
IT Management
a. Provide user support for members of the institute: PCs, laptops, Mac, Windows, Linux, installing/maintaining/upgrading OS and software packages, printer drivers and general troubleshooting user problems.
b. Identify and specify new equipment for IT infrastructure, including network equipment, servers, firewall, storage requirements.
c. Monitor critical equipment for failures and ensure failovers are in place.
d. Monitor and maintain backup storage servers.

Web support
e. Monitor and manage institute web server.
f. Maintain and develop website to ensure visual effectiveness, usability and consistency with house style.
g. Develop, consult and advise in the drafting of user documentation.

Research Software Support
h. Assisting users in code development, e.g. in MATLAB/Python.
i. Developing user awareness of revision control, and testing.
j. Updating and maintaining user software documentation.
k. Engagement with the university Research Software division.

Key requirements are :
- Holder of a University degree or equivalent qualification.
- Experience of:
a. One or more high level programming languages (e.g. C, FORTRAN, Python, JAVA).
b. System administration (Linux/ubuntu server).
c. TCPIP networks

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 5 years in the first instance.
