By Raniere Silva, Community Officer, Software Sustainability Institute.

We are pleased to announce applications to our Fellowship Programme 2019 are now open. Deadline is 3 February, 2019. Below we detail the application process and what to expect from us during the recruitment and post-recruitment stages.

How to Apply?

Each year we try to improve our selection process with the goals of make it faster, fairer and aligned with the long term goals of the Institute. The application form has five parts: mandatory personal information (such as name and contact information) and demographic, who you are and what your plans are, information to be used on the selection process, optional additional personal information (such as online profiles), and how did you hear about us.

Screencast Application

Last year, the general feedback from reviewers was that they like the screencast more than the letter used in previous editions. Because of that, we will continue to use screencast as the main part of the application. We know that recording ourselves can be uncomfortable and, to help you to overcome this challenge, some of Fellows 2018 have agreed to share their successful screencast application on YouTube. Visit our YouTube channel and be inspired.

Collaborating with other Fellows or applicants

We are committed to support Fellows and applicants by working together on their activities and developing themes.

Starting this year, candidates can mention Institute Fellows with whom they will work to build on their activities. We are particularly keen on helping support the development, growth or increase of the scope of communities of practice.

We are also now supporting the case where two applicants choose to work together on their Fellowship plans from inception. This might happen if they know each other, work at the same institution or nearby or work in the same area. The plans of joint applicants need to work on their own, and each candidate needs to upload their own application video, as we award Fellowships to individuals not to groups.

This new section is optional and all applications are assessed on their own merit. We are always looking to support novel work in new and existing areas.

Questions about the Programme should be directed to fellows-management@software.ac.uk.

About the Fellowship Programme

The Programme funds researchers and individuals passionate about research software use and/or development. We help support them to better understand the challenges faced by their domains and to become ambassadors for better software practices in their areas of working and institutions. Our Fellows also develop skills and knowledge around software sustainability network with like-minded individuals from a wide variety of research areas.

Fellows are drawn from a wide range of areas, experience, and career stages. Visit our Fellows’ profiles to read more about those awarded Fellowships in previous years.

Successful applicants will be allocated £3,000 to spend over fifteen months from 1st April 2019 until 31st July 2020. The funding is flexible to support activities that are beneficial to both the Fellows and the Institute: to fund travel to conferences, to setup and run workshops, to organise software sustainability sessions at domain conferences, or to host, organise or teach training events, such as Software Carpentry, Data Carpentry or Library Carpentry. For more examples of the activities funded by the Fellowship Programme have a look at some of our Fellows’ blog posts.

And this time, shortlisted candidates will also be invited to attend Collaborations Workshop 2019 for free (registration, travel and accommodation will be covered by the Institute).

If you have any questions about the Programme, please contact Raniere Silva, Institute Community Officer, at fellows-management@software.ac.uk.
