OLS (Open Life Science)

Deborah Udoh (or Debs) is a Registered Nurse (RN), Midwife (RM) and Public Health Nurse (RPHN) in Nigeria, equipped to bring a unique perspective on technology’s role in advancing clinical practice.

In the tech world, Debs serves as a Research Software Engineer (RSE) and Community Manager at OLS (formerly Open Life Science). Driven by a need to democratise access to research and computational skills, Debs is a Carpentries Instructor and member of The Turing Way community.

One of Debs's key projects is the ongoing development of a “Research 101” course designed to equip aspiring researchers with the foundational knowledge, skills, and tools necessary for their journeys. The course is also aimed to benefit the larger RSE community by acclimatising newly hired RSE who have come from non-academic or non-research-oriented backgrounds.

She is particularly committed to making the research landscape more equitable and diverse, by empowering underrepresented individuals to enter and thrive in the tech field. Through her work and volunteer efforts, Debs exemplifies the transformative power of passion, perseverance, and mentorship.
