I'm a research software engineer within the Geospatial Data Science Group at the University of Glasgow. I lead the team's GeoAI research theme - with ongoing research in areas such as geographic information extraction, multi-modal large language models, and geospatially explicit artificial intelligence. As a research software engineer, I am also involved in promoting good software practices within the team, and helping to ensure appropriate training opportunities are available. I also have a part time secondment with the Alan Turing Institute, for which am involved in community development within the institute's Defence and Security research area.
Outside of my day-to-day research, I am also involved in community building within the university. I helped establish "Software Upskilling for Researchers" - a series of volunteer led workshops aimed at providing research students and staff at all levels with the skills required to produce effective, reproducible research software. The workshops are funded by the university's Centre for Data Science and AI, so machine learning and AI skills are a central part of our remit.
During my SSI fellowship, I hope to build on my efforts in upskilling the RSE community within the University of Glasgow, with specific attention paid to future-proofing researchers for developments in generative AI. This will focus on AI skills such as prompt engineering and retrieval augmented generation, as well as ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in scientific research.
