The Software Sustainability Institute at the EGI Forum 2013

Posted by m.jackson on 6 March 2013 - 5:49pm

EGI2013poster.gifThis year's EGI Forum will be held in Manchester from April 8th-12th. The Software Sustainability Institute will be contributing to the Forum in a number of ways throughout the week.

Our community engagement liaison, Shoaib Sufi, will be giving a talk on "Engaging the Software in Research community", on Wednesday 10th at 11:20.

Also on Wednesday, SSI's policy and communications manager, Simon Hettrick will be giving a talk on "Building sustainable software for science: why good code is only the beginning", at 14:20.

In association with Software Carpentry and EGI, training lead Mike Jackson will lead 3 boot camp "highlights" sessions on Thursday 11th. These are drawn from Software Carpentry's highly successful boot camps, for researchers who want to learn software development skills to do more in less time, and with even less pain. Our sessions are stand-alone and attendees at the Forum are free to attend any or all of them:

  • Using version control to record provenance and collaborate more easily. This session includes an introduction to Git and GitHub.
  • Using testing to help ensure your software, and results, are correct.
  • Data management using a NoSQL database to manage your data more easily. This session includes an introduction to the database MongoDB.

We will also have a stand throughout the duration of the Forum and our team will be available to for advice and guidance about any aspect of software development or sustainability.

We hope to see you there!
