Call for Speakers and Consultants for the Research Software Practices in the Social Sciences

People sitting at a table

We're looking for people, both academics and research software specialists, who are interested in supporting our project by acting either as speakers, giving a talk on a software-related subject, or  as software consultants, leading 1 on 1 support sessions with our project attendees.

Our project, Research Software Practices in the Social Sciences, aims to raise awareness about the importance of software in social sciences, encouraging researchers to use software in their research while following best practices. To achieve this, we plan to organise a series of events that will provide attendees with both hands-on experience in using software and coding languages as well as the theoretical framework of how to approach and work with software within the social sciences. These events will equip participants with the necessary knowledge to effectively apply these skills infuture research endeavours.

Currently, we are looking for supporters, either academics within the social sciences or research software specialists, who would like to participate in two series of events we plan for early Spring 2025. Namely, we are looking for:

Speakers for a series of talks and a larger panel discussion, to be hosted between Monday 20 January and Friday 28 March 2025. Topics we wish to discuss are related to the everyday problems when dealing with software and coding languages, from finding relevant information in the software documentation and basic coding practices to possible venues for software-related collaboration within and between the institutions. Each event will be between 1 and 2 hours long and recorded to be later available online.

We are also happy to hear about possible ideas for talks from prospective speakers. Especially for established researchers and teachers, it may be a good way to record a permanent lecture for the later use.

Consultants, leading 1 on 1 support sessions for the attendees of our events (workshops in 2024 and talks in 2025). The sessions will be hosted between Thursday 9 January and Friday 7 March 2025, with up to 10 meetings arranged per consultant. In our early workshops, we discovered that PhD students and early-career researchers in the social sciences often struggle to find the right people to ask for advice, especially in smaller institutions where software support may be lacking. To address this, we want to connect them with suitable consultants for 1-hour online sessions focused on solving their problems. The issues stated will be directly related to working with R, Python, SQL or OpenRefine.

This is a great opportunity to gather experience and practice software teaching as well as problem solving for those who wish to teach software skills to non-IT academic audiences in the future, either directly or as supporting tutors/mentors.

You can also email andrzej.romaniuk@ed.ac.uk with your expression of interest for either role by Friday 6 December 2024.

We are happy for volunteers, however, payment for hours spent is always available. There is also an option to write short blog posts on aspects of talks or issues encountered.
