The deadline for proposals for participant-led mini-workshops, demo sessions and lightning talks at Collaborations Workshop 2023 (CW23) is 23:59 GMT on Friday, 24 February.

Proposers will be notified of the outcomes by Friday, 10 March 2023. If you have any questions or want to discuss your proposal before submission, please email CW23 Chair Rachael Ainsworth.

Mini-workshops and demo sessions

Mini-workshop and demo sessions offer unique opportunities for CW23 participants and sponsors to give an in-depth look at a particular tool or approach relating to research software. We are looking for mini-workshop and demo sessions connected to the CW23 theme of Sustainable Career Development: looking after your software, your career, and yourself in particular, but are happy to consider any proposals relating to research/software. Proposals can also be related to pitches for the CW23 Hack Day. The mini-workshops and demo sessions will run in parallel on Days 1 and 2 of the workshop - you can view the provisional CW23 agenda here

30- or 60-minute sessions are available to:

  • Demonstrate a particular research software product, digital tool, project, approach or standard
  • Deliver specific training or an interactive tutorial
  • Conduct information gathering
  • Explore a topic or any other ideas you may have!

30-minute sessions are more suitable for demonstrations or presentations with minimal participant interaction (such as 20-25 minutes of show-and-tell of a tool, approach or project with 5-10 minutes of Q&A, for example). 60-minute sessions may be more suitable for training, tutorials, information gathering or exploring a topic, for example, and are required to include active participant engagement/interaction (inclusive of both in-person and remote participants).

CW23 is a hybrid event, and the mini-workshops and demo sessions will have people facilitating and participating both in-person and remotely. A professional audio/visual company will manage the video connection between the in-person room and the associated Zoom room, and helpers from the CW23 Organising Committee will be present to assist during the session. Proposers must consider how the session will be inclusive of both in-person and remote participants. They must also confirm if they will deliver the session in-person or remotely if selected and attend a hybrid facilitation coaching and information session before the event.

Submit your proposal for a Mini-workshop or demo session here.

Lightning Talks

lightning talk gives you two minutes and one slide to discuss a subject. Lightning talks are the perfect way to introduce yourself at the workshop. You could talk about your work, an idea, a problem, promote a mini-workshop/demo you’re facilitating during the event, a pitch for the CW Hack Day or anything related to software and research, and ideally related to the theme or sub-themes of CW23.

The Lightning Talk sessions will have people presenting both in-person and remotely - proposers will need to confirm if they will present in-person or remotely if selected and will be allowed only one slide, which will have to be submitted in advance. A countdown timer will be provided to keep presenters on time.

Submit your proposal for a lightning talk here.
