As part of our Research Software Camp: Next steps in coding we will be running a free Software Surgery which aims to provide a safe and welcoming space for people to get advice on their software challenges.

The software surgery will run throughout the two weeks of the Camp from 16 to 27 May 2022 in allocated 20 minute-slots. It will be open to anyone looking to get expert advice on any aspect of software development from a Research Software Engineer (RSE). This could be a general question on how to approach a particular development challenge, or how to decide which infrastructure or technologies to use for a given situation, or perhaps a specific issue with a particular technology.

What to expect

The Software Surgery is based around the operation of a doctor's surgery, with RSEs taking the role of "doctors" and attendees as "patients". It will be open to anyone with any research software-related problem to receive expert advice, for example on how to employ good development practice, or which technology to use for a given situation and how best to use it. Or you might need a discussion to further understand the problem you have and get help to work towards a solution.

The Software Surgery will run in allocated 20 minute-slots throughout the two weeks of the Camp from 16 to 27 May.  RSEs will provide their availability and attendees can choose the appointment time that suits them (limited to one per person).

During the surgery the RSE has a focused discussion with the attendee to identify a small number of key challenges they are having with their research software. The RSE provides a rough "diagnosis" of the underlying causes behind the challenge(s) and discusses initial steps to improve the situation e.g. a new practice or technology, and how to apply it.

Register your interest for a 20-minute slot with a Research Software Engineer:
