This year, the Institute fellows David Pérez-Suárez, Brigitta Sipőcz and Yo Yehudi are involved in Google Summer of Code as mentors and organisation administrators for OpenAstronomy, an umbrella organisation for open source, open development astronomy projects, and InterMine, a biological data warehouse based at the University of Cambridge. For three months, students are individually mentored to contribute to open source codebases and are paid a stipend (which amounts to $6,600 USD if you're based in the UK). If you are a post-doc, researcher or lecturer, we suggest you read "Downloading developers: The Google Summer of Code" for examples of how beneficial the program can be for your students.

Google Summer of Code

The Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more student developers into open source software development. Students work with an open source organisation on a three-month programming project during their break from school.
