In December 2025, the InclusiveRSE research team presented their work, “A Co-production Approach to Understanding Diversity Issues in Digital Research," at the well-attended online Digital Health Equity seminar series hosted by the University of Manchester’s Christabel Pankhurst Institute.
The InclusiveRSE project, funded by the SSI, aims to improve equity, diversity and inclusivity in RSE-related roles and careers. The team uses co-production research methods to work with RSE-related professionals from underrepresented groups throughout every stage of the research process, from developing the research question to interpreting findings. The team also includes social science expertise to ensure rigorous methods and a strong understanding of wider structural issues in academia. During the latest phase of the project, they interviewed ten research software professionals from underrepresented groups, exploring their education journeys and career experiences to build a richer picture of the challenges and opportunities within the field.
In this seminar, the team offered an engaging look behind the scenes of their cross‑disciplinary co‑production work in RSE—discussing the barriers they encountered and the benefits they experienced, as well as sharing early insights emerging from the first six interviews. If you missed the live session or want to revisit the discussion, the full seminar is now available to watch on YouTube.
