Let the government know why open standards are important
The Cabinet Office is currently running a public consultation on open standards and their role in public procurement.
It is important that this exercise receives as many responses from the community as possible. Open standards allow all kinds of software to compete on a fair basis, and is essential in levelling the playing field for suppliers of open-source software. Maximising competition is crucial if we wish to drive down the currently enormous cost of public IT systems.
The consultation is particularly focused on forming a coherent and justifiable definition of what an open standard is, and for that to succeed everyone's input is needed.
Please consider responding to the consultation with your views, both as an individual and as a representative of you organisation. You can either fill in the online survey (there are separate response sections for chapter 1, chapter 2 and chapter 3), or put your views in an email or letter as described on the website.
The consultation ends on 3 May 2012, so time is short.
