The Software Sustainability Institute is looking to support attendees who require help implementing the skills they have learned through 1 on 1 consulting sessions.
Learning new coding and software skills takes time and effort beyond attending workshops, especially when applying those skills in practice for the first time. To this end, the Software Sustainability Institute is pleased to offer personalised support to our workshop attendees through individualised consulting sessions. This program connects you with experienced software consultants who can assist with specific challenges or guide you through software-related tasks in your research — particularly in applying the skills covered during the workshops and other events we offered in 2024.
Examples of issues we can help with include arranging and running your coding project to be understood by others and in a publishable format, creating interactive visualisations in either R or Python, setting up a relational database for future use, or exploring various ways of cleaning up and reshaping data using specific packages (e.g. Tidyverse for R). Depending on the nature of your problems, we can offer either a single 1-hour session or provide mentor-level support for your project up to 10 meetings. In the latter case, we would be thankful if you could write a short blog post (~300 to 600 words) after the consultation about the project and how these meetings helped shape it.
The consulting program is especially suited for students and early-career researchers, including those from smaller institutions where access to software support may be limited.
If you’re ready to advance your software skills and receive personalized support, we look forward to helping you reach your research goals!
To sign up for consulting sessions, please complete the form by Friday 13 December 2024.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email andrzej.romaniuk@ed.ac.uk.
We look forward to supporting your work!
