SSI director Neil Chue Hong has been quoted in a Nature feature marking ten years since the publication of the FAIR Data Principles.
The article, "How FAIR data are helping to build trust in science" by Amanda Heidt, explores how the FAIR framework, ensuring data are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable, has been adapted across disciplines, and how it has expanded beyond data to cover software and broader research infrastructure.
Neil Chue Hong, who helped establish the FAIR4RS (FAIR for Research Software) principles, discussed the growing reliance on software across research. He noted that increased reliance on software is among the largest changes to data science, to the point that almost every branch of research now uses software in some way. As a result, he said, the SSI advocates for providing scientists with training on best practices when using research software, since it is now very hard to analyse or visualise data without software, and equally hard for software to exist without high-quality data.
