The project aims to identify the conditions that best support research software development in modern research environments, where software plays an increasingly central role. The survey asks about motivations, career aspirations, skills and challenges involved in developing and maintaining research software, particularly open source.

It is open to PhD students, researchers and anyone involved in creating, using or reusing research software. Participation is voluntary, and responses are confidential and will only be presented in aggregate form. The survey has 38 questions and takes roughly 10 to 30 minutes to complete.
