The panel discussion at the Research Software Camp: Next Steps in Coding took place on Monday 16th May and explored the current challenges and gaps in training and skills around following specific career pathways in research software in academia and industry.

Each panellist represented a different career, and they discussed their roles, the skills needed and what training is currently available (or missing). They discussed the training they wished was available to them in the past to help with role progressions, inclusivity and recognition of software-related roles in research and science, and the challenges in following a specific career pathway.

Our panel was chaired by Dr Marion Weinzierl and our panellists were:

  • Anne Lee Steele - Community Manager at The Turing Way
  • Gabriella Rustici - Senior Director, R&D Data Science Learning & Development at AstraZeneca
  • Joanna Ramasawmy - AtLAST scientist at UK Astronomy Technology Centre
  • Jonathan Cooper - Head of Research Software Engineering, UCL
  • Mark Basham - Science Director, Head of AI at Rosalind Franklin Institute
  • Sarah Jaffa - early career Research Software Engineer
  • Simon Hettrick - Software Sustainability Institute Deputy Director
