Research Software Camp: additional FAIR software talks and workshops open for registration

Posted by l.woellenstein on 6 June 2023 - 2:00pm

SSI RSC logoThere are a number of additional workshops and events open for registration as part of the Research Software Camp: FAIR software running between June 19th-30th 2023. These are in addition to the talks and workshops announced last week here. All events and workshops are aimed at a beginner level and no previous knowledge or experience is required.

This year, the RSC aims to increase language diversity. To that end, we’re offering workshops in other languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, and Ukrainian.

Talk

Panel Discussion: FAIR Software

26 Jun 2023 14:00 - 15:00 BST

The publication of the FAIR Research Software Principles in 2022 as a parallel effort to the FAIR Data Principles marks the supported vision where valuable scientific outputs are made ‘FAIR’ by becoming more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. The panel discussion: FAIR data & FAIR software will aim to discuss the state of FAIR Software, its intersections with the FAIR Data principles and what’s coming in the next few years.

Chair: Maria Cruz

Panel: Rena Bakhshi, Leyla Jael Castro, Tom Honeyman, Fotis E. Psomopoulos.

Workshops

Byte-Sized RSE: Code Review

23 Jun 2023 10:00 - 12:00 BST

This session will take a look at the practice of code review, and how we can use GitHub to help us conduct these reviews to collaboratively develop software more effectively.

Instructors: Jeremy Cohen, Steve Crouch.

Byte-Sized RSE: Git Version Control

28 Jun 2023 10:00 - 12:00 BST

This session will look at the uses of Git version control beyond the novice level. If you’re comfortable with the core features of using git — adding and committing files, interacting with remote repositories (cloning/pulling/pushing), dealing with basic conflicts — and you’d like to learn more, this session is for you!

Instructors: Jeremy Cohen, Steve Crouch.

Plotting and Programming in Python for beginners

20 Jun 2023 10:00 - 21 Jun 2023 15:00 BST

Following the Software Carpentry curriculum, this lesson teaches novice programmers to write modular code to perform data analysis using Python. The emphasis, however, is on teaching language-agnostic principles of programming such as automation with loops and encapsulation with functions.

Instructor: Danai Korre

Git Version Control (UKR)

27 Jun 2023 10:00-13:30 BST

(University of St Andrews)

About the Research Software Camps

The Research Software Camps help address the lack of software skills in research through free online introductory workshops and resources. Our RSCs allow researchers with limited or no experience in software engineering to learn new coding skills and receive personal guidance in a welcoming and supportive environment.
