How can you make research data accessible?

You've decided to make the leap and share your research data. You might do this to improve the transparency of your study, allowing others to reproduce the work. Or you want to set up new collaborations or allow others to build further on your research, speeding up scientific discovery. You may also want to obtain credit or visibility for all the work that you put into collecting and curating the data. Or you may simply want to share your data because others require your research outputs to be made publicly available to receive funding or to be published.

Top tips for managing your open-source project community effectively

Have you developed something useful, and want to build a community around it? Before you encourage people to find you and your project, you need to make both easily findable. It is not hard, but surprisingly many miss or disregard this crucial initial step. You also need to figure out what type of people you want to find, and where they currently are.

Top tips for making the most out of Binder

We think research reproducibility is super important! Reproducible research is necessary to ensure scientific outputs can be trusted and built upon in future work. An important aspect of reproducible research is computational reproducibility. Binder is a great tool to help you do this easily. Here we offer some top tips so you can make the most out of Binder.

If you have never used Binder before, our workshop is a great opportunity to get you started. You will be able to take some of your own content (in a R or Jupyter Notebook, or scripts that can be run in the terminal) and prepare it so that it can be used and reproduced by others on mybinder.org. You don't need to be experienced with the command line as all of the material is browser-based.

All our resources are open and easily accessible on Github (see our resources for R here, python here and julia here) so you can teach yourself, if you want.

How to make your script ready for publication

By Tobias Schlauch, Carina Haupt and the software engineering group at the German Aerospace Centre.

This guide is part of the Research Software Camp: research accessibility web content series.

Based on the "Sustainable Software Development for Researchers" alias "Bring Your Own Script and Make It Ready for Publication" workshop, this guide is a short overview about the steps recommended to make your code sustainable, enabling others to use and modify it.

Research Software Camp: Beyond the Spreadsheet

Our Research Software Camp: Beyond the Spreadsheet took place from 1st to 12th November 2021.

We focussed on the uses of spreadsheets in research and the next steps into further use of software in research.

Our events and resources collated different perspectives, experiences, and best practices in the use of spreadsheets, as well as signposted to existing resources.

We ran a parallel social media campaign on the use of spreadsheets in research, which can be accessed using #RSCamps on Twitter.

Watch this intro video on our YouTube channel about Camp's activities.

All of the sessions were free and online.

Research Software Camp: Next steps in coding

What to attend map

Are you thinking of attending a foundational research software course? Have you recently attended one but don’t know where to go from there? Are you an intermediate research software developer and would like to further develop your skills or train others?

Our spring Research Software Camp: Next steps in coding will focus on improving computational and training skills and exploring existing resources out there. The Camp will be held from 16th to 27th May 2022

Through the two weeks, we host a mix of live sessions, such as workshops aimed at various levels of expertise, run a mentorship programme and a software surgery, and publish resources on our website and social media.

Research Software Camp: Research Accessibility

We presented our inaugural Research Software Camp on research accessibility in February/March 2021.

The Camp focussed on different aspects of research accessibility, ranging from making tools, techniques, datasets, software and protocols used in research, reproducible, open and sustainable, to exploring formats and tools to facilitate and improve accessibility for the disabled.

The aim was to bring together people working with research and research software from any career stage and research area to explore and discuss the state of research culture and encourage better practices around research accessibility.

Our autumn Research Software Camp will take place from 7 to 18 November 2022. This edition will explore the topic of mental health in research with a particular focus on research software.

The Software Sustainability Institute runs free online Research Software Camps twice a year over the course of two weeks. Each Camp focusses on introducing and exploring a topic around research software, thus starting discussions among various research communities.

We welcome researchers from all career stages to join in the live and offline discussions that will take place throughout the Camp. Find out more about the Research Software Camp: Supporting Mental Health.
